I started Karate in 1971at Bridge St and the Ballet School in Prestwick when some of my mates suggested it to me. I started under the instruction of Hugh Hastings, who was a fearsome looking character but we have been good friends for a long time. The training was very repetitive but it pays off after a few years.

Summer schools were hard work, eat, sleep, talk and work at all aspects of Karate under the guidance of Harada Sensei. The black belts would be put through their paces and it made me feel good to be a beginner but intrigued by what they could achieve at the end of the week long (slog)

My interest has grown from those days and it still continues to this day. The old saying "the more you put in the more you will gain" is true. Believe me, I have enjoyed my karate all my life so far and when Hugh and I are in our wheelchairs or holding onto our Zimmers we will still be learning and still shouting those famous words from Harada Sensei "Scottish Relax Relax"

Just a note I got my 1st Dan in 1983, 2nd Dan in 1990, 3rd Dan 1992, so don’t rush your thoughts, you have a lifetime of learning in Shotokai Karate.

All the best Sanny.

N.B. Sanny received his 4th Dan grade from Hugh Hastings at a recent course on 11th November 2001.
