Stories:

In the beginning…
I joined the Royal Air Force in 1971 and as part of the training was encouraged to take up a martial art to improve my military effectiveness. For the next few years I wandered aimlessly through several martial arts, but felt that I personally needed something more. That "something more" arrived in 1976 when  I attended a "demonstration" by Hugh Hastings of Kyle Karate Club at HMS Gannet, Monkton. He practised Shotokai as taught by Harada Sensei, a Master who had been taught by the legendary Funikoshi himself.

The night was a real eye-opener, I don’t really know what I was expecting, but what I saw that night was sheer poetry in motion, a blend of timing, balance, relaxation, and movement, no strength, no dynamic tension, no aggression. From that point I was hooked. In 1988 I left the RAF and settled in Ayr to raise a family, a lazy black cat and to grow old, or so I thought.

The Present…
It’s now the year 2000 and I’ve been back at the club for the last 3 years, in 1998 I was graded to 1st Dan by Hugh and Sanny. Now the real work starts. Now I realise that 1st Dan is not the end of years of effort but the beginning of Learning. I’m just thankful to have found the right Club and the right Instructors at the right time…
